GLP-1 medications are an effective tool for weight management, blood sugar control, and metabolic health. They can be life-changing for many people — but the best results come when these medications are used as part of a wider, supportive health plan, not in isolation.
If you’re using GLP-1s (such as semaglutide or tirzepatide), here are some practical ways to maximise benefits, reduce side effects, and support long-term results — including how herbal medicine and nutrition can play a valuable role.
- Support Digestive Health
GLP-1 medications slow gastric emptying, which is part of how they reduce appetite. For some people, this can lead to nausea, bloating, reflux, or constipation.
Herbal support can help soothe and protect the digestive system. Herbal teas such as my organic Digestease Tea helps with nausea and feeling overly full. Other supportive herbs to reduce digestive discomfort include Fennel Seed, Ginger, Peppermint, and Slippery Elm Bark.
Supporting bile production and the health of the liver and gallbladder with herbal medicines such as Dandelion root, Milk thistle, and Artichoke can help keep bowel movements regular and digestion working well. This gentle support for bile flow and liver function may also reduce the likelihood of gallbladder problems while taking GLP-1 medications.
- OptimiseBlood Sugar Balance with the Right Meals
Even when appetite is reduced, what you eat still matters.
Meals should focus on:
- Adequate protein, which is essential for maintaining muscle mass
- Vegetables, providing fibre, vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients
This combination helps stabilise blood sugar, supports digestion, and reduces the risk of muscle loss.
Spices such as cinnamon and turmeric are also valuable additions. They may help further improve blood sugar control while reducing inflammation — working alongside your GLP-1 medication.
- Support Pancreatic and Liver Function
GLP-1 medications act directly on pancreatic pathways, so supporting the organs involved in glucose regulation is important.
Herbs such as Barberry bark, Schisandra and Gotu kola are traditionally used to support pancreatic, liver, and metabolic function, while also helping the body adapt to physiological stress. Used appropriately, they can complement GLP-1 therapy and support overall resilience.
- Manage Appetite and Cravings Gently
While GLP-1s reduce appetite, some people still struggle with cravings or fluctuating energy levels.
Herbal support can help regulate appetite signals more smoothly. For example, Goat’s rue, Cinnamon and Berberine containing herbs may reduce sweet cravings.
Energy levels may be improved with adaptogenic herbs like Siberian Ginseng or Rhodiola – both of which play a positive role in blood sugar regulation too.
- PrioritiseLifestyle Factors for Long-Term Results
Medication is most effective when supported by sustainable lifestyle habits:
- Exercising regularly, with two to four short strength-training sessions per week (just 20–30 minutes each) to maintain – and ideally increase – muscle mass. Preserving skeletal muscle is essential for lasting results, as muscle loss significantly increases the risk of rebound weight gain.
- Daily walking, ideally for forty minutes or more, is an excellent habit which supports losing weight and keeping it off. It also helps to improve sleep and reduce stress levels. Short walks two or three times a day are just as good as one longer walk.
- Adequate sleep, which plays a crucial role in appetite regulation and insulin sensitivity.
- Stress management, ongoing stress can negatively affect digestion, blood sugar balance, and weight regulation. Gentle tools such as breathing practices, along with relaxing activities like drawing, journalling, reading, or spending time with friends, can all be helpful. Herbal teas — including my Organic Calm Tea or Organic Chamomile Tea — and calming herbal tinctures such as Passionflower or Vervain can also support the nervous system. Vervain is particularly useful, as it not only helps ease tension but also supports digestive motility.
